Press Release Body: At the end of October, the Pandolfini Auction House proposes three prestigious auctions, which will be held at the Ramirez Montalvo of Borgo Albizi Palace in Florence.
The first auction, which will be held on the 27th October, provides a single afternoon session dedicated entirely to the items of Princess Maria Anna Ruffo di Calabria. There are approximately 200 lots under the hammer, a Tapestry depicting the coat of arms of Ruffo di Calabria Santapau, (estimate 800-1.200 euro), and set of eight chairs of Renaissance style in Walnut wood, turned by lathe, with leather upholstered seats and the coat of arms of Ruffo di Calabria and Arrigoni of Oddi, carved in gold on the back rest, (estimate 1.000/1.400 euro). Especially the precious Portrait of the Gentildonna dressed in a black dress with a dog and landscape of Florence in the background, painted in oil on canvas, end of XVIII Century and the beginning of the XIX Century, attributed to those close to Louis Gauffier the artist, who lived for a certain period in Florence, (estimate 60,000 / 80,000 euro). In the same historical period, the portrait of Antonio Canova, by Luigia Giuli (Ravenna 1746/49, Rome 1811) which had belonged to the Count of Oddi Daniele of Padova, (estimate EUR 6.000-8.000). The unique Portrait of Joanna Ximenes, painted in oil on canvas of the XVI Century, attributed to a follower of Tiberio Titi or Sanchez Coelho and bearing the inscription on the back Dona Ioanna Ximenes. In the XVIII Century, the history of this prestigious, rich family of Portuguese origin, married into the Panciatichi family, one of the most noble and distinguished families in Tuscany. This happened when a member of the Panciatichi family, Niccol Ciambellano of the Grand Duke Pietro Leopold and the Emperor Joseph II, married in 1762, Victoria of Anton Francesco Ximenes D'Aragona. After the death of her brother, Ferdinand, the Panciatichi family took by decree from the Grand Duke Ferdinand III, the name, emblem and titles of Ximenes D'Aragona, (estimate 20.000/30.000 Euros).
They also presented four panels, which portrays landscapes with figures; Chinese art of the XVIII Century,(estimate 20.000/30.000 euro per pair). Amongst the furniture to be mentioned, is a Veneto Bureau desk with drawers, dating to the second half of the XVIII Century, painted in wood effect and decorated with a pastiglia application, a folding door, glass cabinet with six internal drawers, rounded front, a tray decorated with engraved gilded frames in the fascia, and two drawers below centred by medallions with female profile placed in an engraved frame, ringed frontal and lateral handles, curled stylish feet, (estimate 35.000/45.000 euro).
Finally the furnishings: a pair of silver and gilded golden bronze holy water fonts, Padova, around the 1780, the assayer Marcantonio Bellotto, creator Anzolo Scarabello. Oval frame with carved architrave and falling ribbons, embossed shell with floral motifs, ending in a flame style, each with a centre medallion in gilded bronze finely embossed, chiselled and lathed with the profile of the Virgin Mary and Jesus with the crown of thorns, (estimated 4,000/6,000 euro). A silver coffee pot from the eighteenth century, on a stand, with a pear shaped body and embossed segments, lid with silver finial and wooden curved shaped handle, (estimate 3.500/4.500 euro).
On Tuesday 28th October there will be approximately 300 lots under the hammer: furniture, furnishings and art objects. In particular a large Tuscan wooden glass cabinet of early XVII Century, double layered in walnut and golden veneer, tall top hat shaped, moulded boarder and multiple anti-drip layers in claw design, serrated, lower groomed fascia, with two pairs of large overlapping doors framed with high gouged pillars, decorative moulded base and flanked sides, (estimate 20.000/30.000 euro). A wedding chest from Sienna, half of the XV Century, wooden, covered in guilt pastiglia, raised rectangular base, front and sides decorated with the Dance of Salome, wrought iron side handles, moulded base, bracket feet; the front contains the representation of the Feast of Herod, during which Salome dances for the king before asking as a gift, the head of St. John the Baptist. The representation of this scene, which was very common in the XV Century, can be found in the gilded bronze work by Donatello made for the baptismal font of the Baptistery of Siena, a work in which the author alluded to for the planning of the figuration and architecture. The wedding chest is placed in mid-fifteenth Century, not only by the most strictly figurative aspects, but also by the clothes worn by those characters (from expertise by Luciano Bellosi of the 3rd June 2005, estimated 50.000/60.000 euro).
Among the objects we suggest the sculpture group, Centauro and Fanciulla, by Guido Cacciapuoti, beginning of the XX Century, in silver terracotta in electroplating, which bears the signature on the back of the author, (estimate 2,200 / 2,800 euro), and finally a flower pot, manufactured by Nancy Gallo, beginning of the XX Century, globular body in glass paste, engraved in anemone leaves and flowers, in shades of blue on a yellow ochre, which carries the signature in paste by Gall, (estimate 7.500/9.000 euro).
The session on Wednesday 29th October closes all the activities, with paintings of the XIX and XX Centuries. Around 250 paintings, among these paintings, we recommend: Vase with Calle by Oscar Ghiglia (Livorno 1876 - Firenze 1945), painted in oil on plywood with the inscription on the back: "Livorno 28th September 1925. To the old friend Achille De Dedico, these few, but fine brushstrokes by his friend Oscar Ghiglia Mario Galli, (estimate 20.000/25.000 euro).
Marciana Marina represented by Llewelyn Lloyd (Livorno 1879 - Island of Elba 1949), painted in oil on plywood, signed, titled and dated on the back, (estimate 15,000 / 20,000 euro). La Festa della Madonna by Francesco Paolo Michetti (Touch from Casauria 1851 - Francavilla al Mare 1929), tempera and oil on canvas, (estimate 40.000/50.000 euro). Finally, the Parisian Beauty by Renato Natali (Livorno 1883 - 1979), mix technique on cardboard, signed, the work documented by Ferdinand Donzelli, "Renato Natali 1883-1979", Bologna 1998, vol. 2, p. 15 tav. 9/A, wrongly described in the catalogue as oil on cardboard, (estimate 12.000/15.000 euro).
The exhibition of the lots will be held from Thursday 23rd to Sunday 26th October 2008, at the Ramirez-Montalvo Palace, in the Borgo Degli Albizi No. 26, with the following opening hours: from 10.00 am to 13.00, from 14.00 - 19.00.
